Choosing Colors for Your Wedding and Your Invitations
No matter what season you choose for your wedding date, the colors you pick for all aspects of your wedding are the most important tie to the season, the setting, and your personal tastes. Colors create the feel that your wedding will impart for both the wedding party and guests. Colors can be vibrant or muted, energetic, or romantic.
Tying your invitations into the dress colors, bouquets, or flowers that are currently in season, and table dressings adds a classy touch. Choose colors with which you are comfortable or your guests will sense the color is out of place in relation to your personality.
Exploring the Color Wheel
Before choosing any colors, consider heading to a local fabric or craft store and investing in a color wheel. Typically, color wheels cost no more than a few dollars, but they can come in extremely useful. You spin the wheel to the color you have in mind, and a wide array of complementary colors and shades come up. This can be a huge timesaver when choosing colors that go well together.
Stick to two colors on an invitation. More than two can make wedding guests’ eyes boggle. You want your wedding colors to be remembered for good reasons, not because they were overpowering. Pale backgrounds with dark writing are soothing to the eyes, dark backgrounds and light print can be extremely straining. Avoid those combinations.
Staying True to the Season
In the spring, pink and pale green offer the feel of budding flowers and new grass. Images of new blossoms, beginnings, and birth immediately come to mind. Spring brides often choose flowers that are in season— such as lilacs, daisies, violets, daffodils, and crocus. Muted pinks, soft yellows, purples, white, and pale greens all suffice.
In the summer, gardens come to life with a wide variety of flowers. Deep purples, dazzling pinks, bright reds, intense yellows, and even tones of blue can be viewed in every garden. Think red roses, white baby’s breath, yellow sunflowers and plan from there. Choosing a white gown with red bridesmaid dresses, cummerbunds, and a rose bouquet will create an unforgettable sight. Wedding invitations can be tied into the white of the gown and red flowers
Fall is becoming an extremely popular time for weddings. Orange mums, pumpkins, and red apples spring to mind. Choosing invitations with pale peach backgrounds and dark green or black writing can bring images of pumpkins to mind. The orange invigorates guests into having a truly memorable time. With cooler temperatures and Indian Summers, an outdoor wedding in the fall can offer a pleasurable experience.
Winter is another favorite time of year for weddings. Black and white (providing you keep the use of black in check) are popular colors for the wedding party. As Christmas nears, dark greens (pine) and dark reds (poinsettia) can add a festive feel to your wedding. Consider using those color schemes in your invitations.
The use of color is an excellent way to add your personal touch to the most important day of your life. Do not rush to choose your colors. Take your time, consider all the options, and then turn your dream wedding into a reality.
